London: Rochelle Canteen

Melanie Arnold and Margot Henderson’s delicious nose-to-tail canteen is literally hiding in plain sight in a converted bike shed on the playground behind the old Rochelle School gates.

Margot is one of London’s most influential chefs (in addition to being the wife of Fergus Henderson) and the team sources top-quality British products to create a a delicious a la carte menu.

Follow the regulars’ lead – order as much as you can and share to get a broad taste of what they can do.

Insider Tip:

Ask for tables outside in pretty weather when you arrive - but they can't hold them in advance in case bad weather suddenly pops up.

What to Order:

Sample Menu:

Smoked Haddock Chowder
Lamb’s Heart, Bobby Beans & Pickled Walnut
Sardines, Sage & Anchovy
Tomato & Oregano Salad
Roast Sirloin, Chips & Béarnaise
Deep Fried Rabbit, Aioli & Radishes
Middlewhite Chop, White Beans & Anchovy
Ricotta Gnudi, Sage & Parmesan
New Potatoes
Green Salad
Blackberry Bakewell Tart
Strawberry Mess

Getting In:

Part of the fun factor is in getting there. Since there is no sign, you need to walk to the Victorian school at the Circus’s far side to the brick wall to a door with the word “boys” written above it. Ring the bell, they’ll buzz you in, and the restaurant is in the old bike shed just ahead of you.
